Chapter 335: Encountering Susan Caldwell
Chapter 335: Encountering Susan Caldwell
After taking care of a few things, Vera Xavier paid them no more mind. She had already arrived in Trellis with Jack Judd and Aaron Cheney.
What she needed to do required a massive amount of money. In this world, there was no faster way to get rich than jade gambling. And since her rebirth had given her X-ray vision—a natural-born cheat—it would be a waste not to use it.
After mulling it over at home, she decided to make a trip to Trellis. Her ambitions weren’t grand; she just needed to use her X-ray vision to buy a few top-quality raw jade stones, cut them open, and then find a way to sell them. That would be enough.
She had told her grandmother she was going to the provincial capital, but that was a lie. Yulara was simply too far away, and to the average person, jade gambling sounded far too unreliable. She lied because she was afraid of making her grandmother worry.
She had originally planned to take Jack Judd and two other sharp-witted young men to Trellis. She had no idea how Aaron Cheney found out, but he’d cornered her at the train station, dead set on coming along.
With no other choice, she had Aaron Cheney get a ticket and join her on the trip to Trellis.
Once they arrived in Trellis, the group found a hotel near the jade market and checked in.
Aaron Cheney was exceptionally excited. It was his first time traveling so far from home, and on top of that, he was here for jade gambling. He was practically vibrating with excitement.
Vera Xavier couldn’t be bothered with him and went to ask the hotel owner about the state of the jade trade.
The hotel owner was a portly, middle-aged man in his forties. Perhaps because Vera Xavier was charming and beautiful, the owner answered her questions completely, holding nothing back. "You’ve come at a bad time," he said. "I hear a jewelry merchant from Marinus showed up recently. They’re loaded and bought up most of the good material on the market. Because of that, the price of raw stones has skyrocketed!"
Vera Xavier smiled. "We’re just curious. We came to see what all the fuss is about."
Though she said that, she was inwardly frustrated. ’The money I have on hand would be a fortune to an ordinary person,’ she thought, ’but in the world of jade gambling, it’s barely enough to get in the door if I want to buy high-quality material.’
’If the prices for raw stones have really shot up, the money I have might not be enough to get anything of good quality.’
This made Vera Xavier’s heart sink. She knew perfectly well that getting a lucky find like she had on Crestfall’s Cobble Street was pure chance. She couldn’t count on that kind of luck again.
She decided to head out for a walk to get a feel for the area, but before she could even leave, someone came rushing in and collided squarely with her.
Her reflexes were quick; she shot out a hand to brace herself against the counter and managed to stay upright.
The other person wasn’t so lucky and went sprawling to the floor.
Before Vera Xavier could say a word, the other person scrambled to her feet and started yelling, "Are you blind?! Didn’t you see me coming? Don’t you know how to get out of the way?"
The girl’s shouts carried the distinct accent of the capital, Veridia.
Vera Xavier took a closer look and saw that the unreasonable person was a young woman of about eighteen or nineteen. She wasn’t very tall, and her features weren’t particularly refined, but her eyes were huge. As they glared, wide with indignation, they revealed a spoiled and willful nature.
Vera Xavier smiled. She’d met this young woman in her past life. Her name was Skylar Crowe, and her family’s background couldn’t compare to the Caldwell Family’s. She was Susan Caldwell’s most loyal sidekick, and the two were very close. They often went out together; wherever you found Skylar Crowe, Susan Caldwell was sure to be nearby.
She felt the world’s sense of fate was truly remarkable. To think she would end up running into Susan Caldwell here first!
